Hemp vs. CBD

Hemp and CBD are two names that cause a lot of confusion. Most people tend to use these terms interchangeably to refer to one product, which is wrong.

While Hemp oil, also referred to as Hemp Seed Oil, and CBD oil are made from the same plant, they usually have different characteristics.

CBD oil is obtained from the leaves, stalks, and flowers of the hemp plant. These are the only parts in the hemp plant that contains cannabidiol. This means CBD oil has high levels of CBD content, a compound that provides many health benefits.

Hemp oil, on the other hand, is extracted from hemp seeds. The seeds contain very little to no CBD content. Pure hemp oil contains less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by volume, but it is rich in nutrients and other bioactive compounds that are beneficial to human health.

Hemp Oil

Hemp seed oil contains essential fatty acids, nutritional antioxidants, gamma-linolenic acid, vitamin B, and vitamin D.

Given that hemp oil has no THC and little CBD, people hardly use it for recreational needs. However, it can be used for cooking, manufacturing clothing, and creating industrial products like fuel and concrete.


CBD oil contains the various compounds of the Sativa plant including CBD and THC. Due to the traces of THC in CBD oil that give psychoactive effects, some people use it for recreational purposes.

Other than that, people use CBD oil for its medicinal benefits. This includes using it to manage various conditions like; anxiety and depression, pain, relaxation, inflammation, and treating medical conditions such as epilepsy and arthritis.

There are 3 different types of CBD oil available in the market depending on its chemical composition:

  • CBD Isolate which is pure CBD without other cannabinoids
  • Full-spectrum CBD oil contains CBD and other cannabinoids including THC
  • Broad-spectrum CBD oil which has CBD and other cannabinoids, but no THC

These CBD oils can be used in consumer products like beauty products and beverages.
